| Quitting Using with Addictions |
|
Whatever the addiction you suffer from, there will likely be one thing in common; you have something that you use to have some impact on your mood. Mood altering substances can come in physical and emotional ways. Whether your addiction is drugs, shopping, eating, or nearly anything else; the most important part of finding recovery from your addiction will be to stop using mind and mood altering things in general. Addiction comes with the compulsion to do the worst things sometimes, even though you know the result. Recovering from addiction to be at all successful will require you to avoid using any whatsoever. Of course that will seem an awful lot if you don’t focus down to manageable amount of time, particularly “Right Now”. If you don’t use right now, you won’t get high. And you won’t be back around tomorrow wondering what happened. As long as you don’t use right now, you will do ok. Put it off till later. Hint: It’s always right now.
There are a few pre-requisites, which many fail to find. The first is while your addiction may have affected many, trying to get free of it for the many will likely be a futile losing fight. There is only one you will succeed to quit using for, and that is you!
You will also want to realize that trading one addiction for another won’t work either. A couple of these tactics have been called “The Marijuana Maintenance Plan” and “The Alcohol Maintenance Plan”, among many other similar tactics. Putting down cigarettes and then eating a ton of food for example will simply replace your addiction. What you really need to do in this case, is get busy, and focus on finding useful things for doing with your hands that are used to holding a cigarette. This aspect applies to drinks as well.
In the process you can find many support groups. Addiction can be a loners problem, so getting off your drug of choice may have to be un-alone. There are many out there that have gotten clean, sober, etc that get together regularly and often take the time to reach out a hand to others that are starting out doing the same.
Probably the most original of these programs was Alcoholics Anonymous; however the concepts of that very successful program have extended to nearly any addiction found. Among the names include Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Pills Anonymous (PA), among many other self supported organizations that turn down outside contributions.
Overall the organizations are for addicts by addicts (whatever the specific addiction). One thing to be said about NA is that it isn’t focused on any one drug; rather its primary focus is addiction. Many have found at least a beginning for addiction recovery there before finding other fellowships that were more focused in the area of recovery of their specific addictions. The most important thing, find what works and stick to it. |
